The Caribbean Island Carriacou

Carriacou strictly translated means "island of reefs" and is the biggest island of the Grenadines being part of the tri-island-state of Grenada.

Climate:
During the year the temperature varies between 28-29 degrees Celsius and the wind blows mostly from the east with a speed from 10-25 knots. There are two seasons: the rainy season (June- November) and the dry season (December- May). In the average a very healthy climate plus sunshine the whole year through - except a few rain showers now and then.
Carriacou
is a 13 square mile island located north of Grenada. Petite Martinique 586 acres is located east of Carriacou. Both islands are regarded as dependencies of Grenada. Hillsborough is the only town and seat of Government business. Nevertheless much business is done at Windward and Harvey Vale. |

Carriacou's population
is estimated at 6000 people while Petite Martinique has approximately 900 people of African and Scottish descent. The main occupations of the islanders are fishing and agriculture.
The official language
is English. However, in some of the Villages a French-African patois is spoken.
Our currency
is the East Caribbean dollar. However, trading is done in US and canadian dollars and the English pound. |

General business hours
are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. There are two banks on Carriacou - First Caribbean International Bank and the Republic Bank of Grenada with an agency in Petit Martinque.
Festivals:
There are three major cultural activities. Carnival held in february or early March, Regatta held on the 1st weekend in August and Parang on the weekend prior Christmas.
Main places of interest:
The Museum at Hillsborough, Old Sugar Mill at Belair with its panoramic view, Windward for boat building, the Oyster Bed at Harvey Vale, Ruins at Dumfries and of course our beautiful sandy beaches - Paradise Beach at L'Esterre and Sandy island off Hillsborough.

Religion:
The main religious denominations are Roman Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal, Seventh-Day-Adventist. Church services are held on Sunday mornings between the hours of 6:30 a.m., except for the Seventh-Day Adventist on Saturday mornings.
