Hillsborough & Tyrell Bay / Carriacou, 18th of October 2004

The 4th of September 2004 became for Carriacou, the biggest island in the Grenadines island-chain, a historical date. For the first time ever a wreck as an artificial reef was sunk with permission of the Grenada Ports Authority in the waters around Carriacou.

Leader of the project was the Grenada Scuba Diving Association in conjunction with the patronage of Jerry Stewart / Tyrell Bay Yacht Haul-Out who also generously donated the tugboat “Westsider”.

After Hurricane Ivan passed the island and left it with very minimal damage Carriacou’s tourism plant is intact and the successful project added a new exciting feature to the already diverse range of activities and places to see – certainly attracting more visitors to the island.

The name Carriacou derives from the first indian settlers and means, “ The Island surroundedby reefs “ and the bio-diversity of the marine life people can explore visiting the reefs around Carriacou is now being completed by adding the adventure and thrill of wreck-diving to the underwater-activities.

The “Westsider” was build in the 1960’s and worked for around fifteen years in the Caribbean: participated in hurricane “Hugo”, was used in the Yacht-Salvage-Business on St. Thomas and continued in the last six to eight years ploughing the seas in Guadeloupe where it was finally purchased by Mr. Steward. Now the ship has found a revered spot within the boundaries of the planned marine park where it will give marine life a new habitat and receive appreciation from the divers.
